Overview


The club, housed in the famous Gorky Sadan, Kolkata courtesy the then Soviet Union, and named after the former world champion, Alexander Alekhine, was launched by a few chess enthusiasts on 26th February 1976.

Since inception, the club took active role to strengthen Indo-Russian Friendship and is imparting the education on chess to young children and also started organizing different level of tournaments including schools' chess championships, world youth international, grandmasters' chess, rapid chess and many other events - it is a record that more than 200 grand masters took part in different events organized by the club at Gorky Sadan, Kolkata.

Coaching at club

Coaching is provided to young students. There are several chess coaches attached with the club looking after the development of the games of chess of the students. Both theoretical and practical classes are taken by the coaches. Besides, several practical tournaments are organized by the club for the students so that they do not face much problems in taking part in Chess Tournaments. Importance is given to gain international ratings by the students of the club.

Classes are usually taken in the evening from Monday to Saturday and in the morning on Sunday. Coaches fix the class of any particular student as per students' understanding the game of chess. Both English and Bengali medium of instructions are arranged as per need.

Admission Procedure

For seeking admission for coaching, please drop one application stating details of the student and the parents. As soon as the present coaching session is over, you will receive a letter from the club for an interview.

The club has different chess classes depending upon level of understanding the game of chess by the students. Classes are usually taken from Monday to Saturday in the evening and on Sunday in the morning. After the interview, coaches fix necessary class for the newly admitted student. Medium of instructions is Bengali or English. 

Preferred age for admission is between 5 and 7. Usually newly admitted students are allotted one/ two classes a week. 

Those who know the game and secured more than 5 points in any Rating Chess Tournament/ State Level Tournament/ National Level Tournament/ The Telegraph Schools Chess Tournament, may approach the club for direct admission to an appropriate class to be fixed by the coaches/ coach in charge.

vThe only Club which was honoured with the presence of maximum number of celebrities such as Mother Teresa, Satyajit Ray, Vishwanathan Anand, Kapil Dev, Sunil Gavaskar, Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, Anil Kumble, B.S. Bedi, Ajit Wadekar,Jawagal Srinath, Leslie Claudius, Baichung Bhutia,P.K.Banerjee, Gurbux Singh, Sailen Manna, Chuni Goswami, Laxman Singh, Naresh Kumar, Vece Paes and many others.
