From the BISHOP'S COLLEGE in the British Raj to Bengal Engineering College in Independent INDIA and then to the status of a Deemed University and finally to a State University has been a long journey. In the Year 1996, to celebrate the 140th year of foundation, we launched this Page to emphasize the contribution this college has made to the development of Engineering Studies and Technology in this country and abroad.Every year hundreds of students from this premier Institution form the creme-de-la-creme of administration , management and technocracy , both in the Public & Private sector corporations.
This 149 year old Institution, the second oldest of its kind in INDIA and a paradise of a place, with Deodar & Palm fringed roads,crystal clear Pools and emerald green playgrounds invites a journey into its sanctum sanctorum .
Life goes on like an ever flowing stream,meeting on its way that which occurs.Yet as time advances,we have to adapt ourselves to suit the surroundings.
Established in 24th November 1856 occupying three rooms in Writers' Building to meet the requirement of trained Engg. personel for Public Works Department as Civil Engineering College ,was affiliated to the Calcutta University in May 1857 .
From 1865 to 1879 the College functioned as Civil Engineering Department of Presidency College. In 1880 the college shifted to it's new and permanent home the lush campus at Bishop's College, Howrah. It got its name, Bengal Engineering College in 1921.

The college started its first Computer Center.

The new degree course in Computer Science & Technology was introduced. The Department introduced Post Graduate Courses (M.E from 1992) as well as Degree in Master of Computer Applications (M.C.A from 1988/1996).

Architecture
At present this department offers two full time courses B. ARCH and MTRP. Bachelor of Architecture course is an Under Graduate course of five years duration with ten semesters course structure. Master of Town and Regional Planning course is a full time Post Graduate course with one and half years duration with three semesters course structure.

Admission Procedure
B.Arch. course is conducted through the Joint Entrance Examinations under Government of West Bengal. At present the total number of seat is 22 including SC/ST candidates and State nominee. This B.Arch. course is recognized by Council of Architecture and AICTE.
Master programme is conducted by this department under Controller of Examinations, B.E. College (DU). Total number of seats for MTRP candidates is 12 including GATE, Non-GATE and Sponsored candidates. This course is also offered for B.Arch. & Civil Engineering graduate candidates. MTRP course is recognized by Institute of Town Planners, India.
