Today, NIE is one of the premier institutions in the country offering B.E. degree in Civil Engineering, Computer Science, Information Science, Electrical, Electronics, Industrial & Production, Mechanical Engineering and part-time B.E (evening course) for practicing Civil Engineering Diploma holders. The NIE also offers Master's degree specializations in Hydraulics, Power Systems, Production Engineering & System Technology, Computer Applications to Industrial Drives, Computer Network Engineering, Information Technology and Product Design & Manufacturing and Computer Applications (MCA). The NIE is a recognised research institution under VTU and offers Doctoral Programmes in Civil, Electrical, Computer Science, Mechanical and Industrial Production Engineering.
According to the Outlook Magazine survey - 2006 of the Top Engineering Colleges in the country, NIE holds 55th position, 6th position in the state and 3rd position among VTU affiliated colleges.
In fact, the NIE alumni have occupied high positions in educational institutes like IITs, IISc, and IIM, national research laboratories and in major industrial units in India and abroad. Some of the alumni have become very successful entrepreneurs.
As NIE marked the milestone of the fiftieth anniversary in 1996, a year-long Golden Jubilee Celebrations were held during 1996-97. To mark the Diamond Jubilee occasion (2006-07), NIE Management through the NIE foundation has proposed to construct a hi-tech indoor sports complex at the newly acquired 6 acre plot near the existing campus. This project is likely to complete by September 2008. NIE has a landed property of 5.48 Acres of land under No.1817/A & 6.37 Acres of Land under No.1126/5-F31 & 1126/6-F31/1.

Admission is open to students who have passed
10+2 examination of PU / CBSE. with English as a subject of study. OR
B.Sc. with Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry / Computer Science. OR
3 year Diploma. Minimum of 50 percent marks in the final examination. OR
Any other equivalent examination approved by the VTU
Admission to the Institute will be made according to directives of AICTE and Karnataka Government as applicable to each academic year.
MASTER'S DEGREE
Admission is open to all candidates who have passed B.E. / B.Tech examinations (in relevant field) of VTU or any other University recognised by this University or any other examinations recognised by this University as equivalent with not less than 50% (45% in the case of candidates belonging to SC/ST) of the marks in the aggregate in the examinations of the semester considered for the declaration of class.
The selection is based on the performance in the qualifying examination, written test and personal interview. Preference will be given to candidates qualified in GATE.
M.Sc. and DOCTORAL PROGRAMMES
Admissions are as per regulations of VTU. For all PG degrees, Diploma courses and research programmes candidates have to apply to the Principal.
NIE has an excellent and fully functional ISO 9001:2000 certified Training and Placement Division. The T&P Division has adequate infrastructure comprising of group Discussion and Interview Rooms. The placement cell is equipped with Computers with internet facility. The placement cell maintains a database of all the registered students with all relevant details and information of companies visiting the campus. A large number of companies visit the campus every year and recruit eligible students from the campus. The number of students placed through campus recruitment activity is increasing every year.
The placement cell in NIE is run by student coordinators who are elected by the students from all branches. A senior member of the staff, designated as Placement Officer, is in charge of placement and training activities.
During the academic year 2008-09 we had a total of 250 students placed through campus recruitment. We had the privilege of being visited by 65 companies including 40 IT-companies and 25 non-IT companies We had the good fortune of being visited by core companies specific to each domain such as ABB LTD. and BOSCH INDIA LTD for mechanical and Industrial & Production, L & TEmsys, FREESCALE for electrical & Electronics and Electronics & Communication, TCS, WIPROfor Computer Science and also by many dream companies such as Cisco, IBM, AMAZON and MICROSOFT. The placement cell library has a good collection of books and materials related to placement and overall personality development.
The Training Culture @ NIE
As part of the training activity, focused training for Aptitude, Technical Tests, Group Discussions, Facing Interviews and Speed Maths is imparted to all the pre-final year students who register with this office.The Placement Officer regularly contacts many IT-related and manufacturing organisations and forwards details of eligible students to the industry as and when needed.
The students from final year help the students of pre-final year in preparing them for the actual recruitment.There are two sessions, one during the tenure of the odd semester and the other that continues during the even semester.They hold various activities which include Aptitude tests, Group discussions, C tests, Technical tests,Verbal tests and Psychometric tests. Apart from these, at the end of every session a mock interview is held which simulates the actual recruitment process.
Further, interactive sessions with the students of final year who have been selected by the companies are frequently arranged. Here the students narrate their experiences during the interview process.They give facts / necessary information that would add on students' preparation.
Apart from these regular workshops are conducted by professionals of the above said fields to fine-tune the skills of the students.
