At the time when India was ruled by the Britishers and girls were not allowed to even come out of their houses, to even consider getting educated, a group of Gujarati businessmen came together to set up a primary school for Gujarati girls.
It was originally established in 1921 as Rashtriya Shala by Shri Kishorelal Mashruwala & Shri Gokulbhai Bhatt. Subsequently the group of social workers expanded to a large number of other service minded Gujarati businessmen of Vile Parle area, who then came together to form SVKM in 1934.
A number of eminent educationalists have always been associated with SVKM. In 1934, Rashtriya Shala was taken over by SVKM and in the year 1936, it became Smt.GokalibaiPunamchandPitamberHigh School. On 2nd November, 1938, the Foundation Ceremony of the SchoolBuilding was done at the hands of Shri Bhaidas Maganlal.
A number of eminent Gujarati literary figures such as Shri Jhinabhai Desai, Shri Umashankar Joshi, Shri Amritlal Yagnik, Shri Indra Vasavada etc. had started their teaching career in this School. The Opening Ceremony of the School was done by the hands of Shri Balasaheb Kher, who was the First Chief Minister of Bombay. Finally on 28th May 1939, the School became operational.
The members of SVKM were marked by patriotic fervour, selfless service and each one of them were known for their spirit of indigenous enterprise. All of them were committed to education and public service. Today from 1930’s to 2009, the Mandal has come a long way to emerge as one of the eminent education providers in the western suburbs of Mumbai.

The Agreement entered into between The Stock Exchange Education and Research Services, a public trust established by the Bombay Stock Exchange and SVKM's NMIMS in March 2005 became the platform for the setting up of the BSE SVKM's NMIMS Centre for Capital Market Studies to conduct educational programmes in the field of Capital Market Studies. This resulted in the design and development of the curriculum for the MBA (Capital Markets), which was approved by the Academic Council and the Board of Management of the DeemedUniversity. The coming together of NMIMS and the BSE symbolizes the cooperation between two renowned institutions of the vibrant city of Mumbai, the financial capital of India.
The Stock Exchange, Bombay, is over 130 years old. In addition to being a well-known, well-established institution, it is also modern and futuristic in its outlook. In 2005, it took the shape of a corporate body, after which it is called the BSE. The Exchange has been a pioneer in more ways than one. The BSE Sensitive Index, called the SENSEX is the bell-weather index. This single number is used as a reference point by the entire investing community interested in India. Over the years, BSE has used technology, management and information at its command to its advantage and serve as a superb platform for investment. Listing on the BSE is a matter of prestige for a number of issuers in India. With the opening up of the Indian economy to global forces, the day is not far off when overseas companies also seek listing on the BSE to offer Indian investors more investment opportunities. The Stock Exchange has taken a number of initiatives in investor education, in over two dozen cities all over India. The BSE Training Institute provides education and training in various aspects related to the capital markets.
With the revolution in global capital flows, information and technology, there is an acute need for trained professionals to man important positions in all spheres of capital market activity. This includes stock exchanges, commodity exchanges, regulatory bodies, policy-making bodies, market intermediaries, asset management companies, corporate bodies, etc, to name a few. With this objective in mind, a long-duration program called the MBA (Capital Markets) has been custom-designed by the two collaborators.
The program is unique in the sense that it integrates conceptual knowledge, contemporary inputs, technology, information and skill development. Live data from BSE will be available to the participants on a continuous basis. There is a high IT application content in the program, using state of the art hardware and software. Exercises, assignments, case studies, classroom discussions, testing of models, research projects etc will all be done with real data, even on-line data in certain cases where applicable. In certain trimesters, days will be reserved for mock trading sessions so as to upgrade the trading skills, and integrated with the conceptual knowledge imparted by a team of core as well as visiting faculty. Classes are held at the center equipped with top class facilities and faculty, supported by a rich library of books, journals and IT software. The first seminar on Capital Markets, INVESTCRAFT sponsored by BSE, was conducted on June 2006. It was addressed by seasoned practitioners and was very well received by students as well as market participants.
