Placement Services

When you graduate and apply for a job it is a major advantage to have some real experience and be able to demonstrate that you can function effectively in a real working environment.
Sheffield Hallam University is the largest provider of placement years, or sandwich courses, in the UK. These are a period of industrial or business placement during your course, usually in your third year. Students tell the university that work placements provide them with a 'missing link' - the connection between their course and how their studies relate to their career.

Benefits of taking a work placement include:

  • the experience of working in a relevant industry, business or organisation
  • the opportunity to apply the skills you learn in your studies to real life
  • a chance to appreciate the value of team work in working life and allow you to develop your communication skills
  • the chance to earn some money while you gain experience

Placements in the UK and abroad

  • Although the majority of students are placed in the UK, Sheffield Hallam University have placed students in mainland Europe, North America and Australia.
  • Sheffield Hallam University encourage students to be flexible about location. If your placement is in Europe, you may be able to apply for financial support from the Leonardo da Vinci programme.

Support for you while you are on placement

  • Sheffield Hallam University will help you to find a suitable work placement and assign you to a tutor who will visit you throughout the year to make sure that you and your workplace supervisor are happy with the progress of your placement. You can contact your tutor at any time between visits if you need to.
