Digital Video Production

The two-and-a-half year undergraduate professional diploma programme in Digital Video Production places emphasis on practical training in the various creative and technical aspects of the film-making process. It exposes students to the core elements of the medium – screenplay writing, production, direction, videography, sound recording, non-linear editing and post-production sound – and includes internship with industry and a final diploma project.

The key elements of this program are:

Video Production
Production topics include all aspects of pre-production, production, and post-production. Every semester includes exercises for different aspects of film-making and is punctuated with a semester-ending video project.

Film Studies
Film studies include film theory, criticism and the histories of experimental, documentary, and narrative film and video.

Liberal Arts
The nature of the film medium requires a broad background in the Liberal Arts and a inter-disciplinary approach. This aspect is integrated into the program as organic extensions of the films screened and also as separate themes running through a semester.

Internship

Students embark on their internships with industry at the end of the second year. The internship could be in areas which are not offered in the course curriculum, or could be a future trajectory that the student would like to engage with.

Animation and Visual Effects

The two-and-a-half year undergraduate Professional Diploma Program in Animation and Visual Effects was introduced in 2008. The program aims at producing students proficient in creative expression by means of both 2D and 3D animation.

The program seeks to foster a forum for creative expression and storytelling, giving students the opportunity to create globally acceptable pieces of work whilst pushing the envelope in terms of technique and technology.

The curriculum focuses on the development of the animator as a thinker-performer who is well-versed in the conception and realization of fresh narratives emerging from the traditional and contemporary Indian and global contexts.

A judicious mix of the arts with skill-based training, life skills and communication practice lend themselves to the development of abilities in real-world problem solving. Students are exposed to a series of exercises in dramatics, music, art and sound; 2D, 3D and compositing software; projects with environmental and societal impact, and an adequate understanding of graphic/spatial modeling media.

Industry internships enable the students to get a feel of what industry is doing while at the same time questioning and rethinking some of the approaches and traditions set by both media and the industry itself. The long-term objective is to enable and empower students to generate and evolve a uniquely Indian approach, stories, characters, settings, forms and styles drawing upon India's rich cultural heritage.

Sangama Lab

The two-and-a-half-year undergraduate Professional Diploma Program in Srishti which allows for hybrid multi-disciplinary spaces called "labs" is the Sangama Lab.

In the Sangama Lab, students have the opportunity to navigate their own pathway choosing courses across disciplines to construct a versatile learning experience for themselves.

The courses the Sangama Lab students choose complement the projects that they get involved with in the areas of ecological design, experience design, sustainable design, heritage and culture design. In this process, they acquire skills pertaining to research, culture, context, graphic design, exhibition design and much more.

The Sangama Lab is the latest in a line of "labs" that Srishti has supported over the past decade. Each "lab" is dedicated to certain over-arching idea which are often achieved in a non-linear manner.

On completing the Sangama Lab, students are free to take up a final diploma project of their own conceptualization. They are awarded a Professional Diploma in Art and Design on successful completion of their diploma project.

Game Design

Game Design is a multi-disciplinary Advanced Diploma Program open to artists, designers and programmers. The program goes beyond commercial games and explores new paradigms in gaming, interfacing with other disciplines such as education, narratology and music. Students are encouraged to explore their own areas of interest and produce content and research that can bring new perspectives to the field of gaming.

This is not a "taught" program but one in which the student has to take the initiative in charting his or her learning and conceptualizing possibilities and projects related to gaming.

For instance, an on-going Game Design project explores locative games and interactive media as a way of exploring and discovering historical sites. Serious and educational gaming, which goes beyond the realm of gaming as entertainment,is the central motif of this program.

Product and Interface Design

Product & Interfacec Design is a 2 & a Half year specialization that imparts a thorough understanding of the self, surroundings and user insight, equipping students with the ability to translate these understandings into real innovative design solutions. Our students acquire the competence of craft with all its technological and vocational aspects on a contemporary industry level and yet build in a deep sense of responsibility and sensitivity towards their surroundings. We encourage students to engage with the real world by asking questions, identifying and solving design problems and empathizing with people who use or need design.

We build a teachable, learnable and transparent body of knowledge for the extended art and design community based on a collaborative learning platform. The program also straddles a number of disciplines and requires students to be adaptable, flexible and willing to work within and along side a wide range of disciplines including film, animation, furniture, textiles, illustration, new media or design pedagogy.

The course is run mainly through projects and rarely relies on a lecture format for the dissemination of material for the students. The work is treated as a live space where students will have the freedom to negotiate their own pathways.

Mission

Srishti's mission is facilitated by its organizational structure – a “community of learners” comprising industry-experienced faculty and energetic students who continually explore and experiment with art and design pedagogies, aesthetics, values and innovative practices.

We believe that education is beyond instruction and skill; that knowledge is inherently integrated and complex and, hence, learning must be embedded in real-world problems and situations.

We believe in looking beyond the origins of references and citations from scholarly texts and peer-reviewed journals; the references of artists and practitioners of the unschooled also contribute to learning.

We believe in extending education beyond the “gated” and the “preserved”; it should be “permeable” and “porous” allowing students to work at the level of the street and the bazaar, and to explore and experiment with the textures of the rural and the urban.

Approach

Srishti's culture encourages thinking, questioning and experimenting to harness the artistic and intellectual potential of each individual and place the institution at the leading edge of contemporary art and design discourse.

A multi-disciplinary approach inculcates self-initiated learning and independent thinking and expands perceptual perspectives. Regular interaction with design studios, production and distribution centers, community projects, retail establishments and industry forms a vital bridge between Srishti and the world.

Srishti has a strong indigenous cultural grounding in the teaching of the visual arts and also provides a liberal arts curriculum comparable to reputed institutions in the West. Srishti is interfacing with institutions across the world with a vision for and commitment to quality education through new technologies and pedagogies.

Through the Artists-in-Residence and Research Associate programmes, Srishti supports new and critical innovations in the field of art and culture using real world projects to enable an integrated cognition of the design and communication arena, facilitating at times an environment where one can “earn and learn”.
